Clement Crawford.
Darling. Dearest. Dead.
1959 - 1984
Edinburgh, Scotland ✞ Cambridge, England

PROFILE

NAME: Clement (Clem) Crawford.
PRONOUNS: He / They.
SEXUALITY: Hopeless loverboy.
OCCUPATION: Pathologist and Researcher.
EDUCATION: The Natural Sciences Tripos; University of Cambridge.
PERSONALITY: Clem is currently employed as a Pathologist, completing night shift laboratory work. He has a passion for researching rare diseases and has dedicated many years to this pursuit. Outside of work, Clem can be a social creature who enjoys making friends, trying new experiences, and learning for learning's sake - although his deteriorated sense of good social etiquette can occasionally hold him back.
LIKES: The smell of marmalade, long walks on the beach (at night), Microsoft Office, bakeries.
DISLIKES: Colleagues leaving food to go mouldy in the staffroom fridge, rudeness, potted plants that die as soon as you get them home.
HEADCANONS1) Clement has never fed from another vampire. He also isn't entirely sure whether he actually drank from his sire, or if he received some other type of transfusion. He has a (hopefully unfounded) fear that if he drank from another vampire, THEY would end up being his sire.2) He used to play bass in a band in the 1970's. The band was solely made up of his mates from school (they were all teenagers) and they were not very good.3) Clem is tech literate, but they are also tech chaotic. They're a Microsoft Office fan and can MOSTLY work social media. Their emoji usage is unhinged and they love memes. I don't think they're social media FLUENT, though.4) Clement and his fiancée used to host Dungeons and Dragons sessions in the 1980's, in their university housing, and at least 30% of the time it would somehow involve the party making out with each other. They'd find an excuse. They were just horny nerds.5) They deliberately refer to their vampiric turning as when they were 'murdered' / 'killed', because that's exactly what happened. They find it is better for their mental health to be honest and grow around the tragedy, rather than trying to doll it up as a 'gift'.6) Due to Clement's decision to only feed from animals, they have to drink much more regularly than other vampires. They're pretty much consistently with a flask, an opaque travel mug, a Capri-Sun style pouch, a tinted cup etc. etc. containing blood.7) Clement has an enhanced sense of smell that can help him identify people. If he were to encounter someone with a similar ability to himself, they'd be able to confirm that Clement's scent (predictably) is of Blood Oranges.

WORLDBUILDING: Every vampire story has a new take on key vampire lore and wider vampire society. For Clem, I envisioned a world wherein vampires take a rather class-based, high society approach to their own existence. Yes, a vampire brat might recruit her whole night shift team at Subway for fun, but such vampires are seen as 'lower' and a waste of immortality by the older vampire families. Some vampire families are also known to selectively breed / marry into each other for reasons such as political allegiances, the acquirement of land, and/or to create the most powerful vampire babies. For example - a family known for their incredible vampiric 'hypnotism' abilities may procreate with a family known for their strength in the hopes of creating the most impressive progeny. Therefore, older vampire families with 'respectable' and 'pure' bloodlines strongly discourage and shun the turning of new vampires for reasons that are not strategic. For them, it is akin to a Duke impregnating his housemaid and expecting the family to raise the baby. This factors into Clem's existence as he most certainly should not have been turned, and there is a chance that he was turned entirely by mistake. He carries a vampire bloodline that he has no entitlement to.Another element of worldbuilding I have considered is how vampires are made. I personally enjoy the many different variations of this lore between stories and media products, and do not want to commit to only one definitive method. What I can say for Clem is that he definitely would have envisioned something akin to Hammer Horror films and classic vampire stories; a bite on the neck, and a relatively quick transformation. What Clem experienced was a violent lower-throat-tearing, closer to his shoulder more than anything, and a painful few weeks where his 'undeadening' took place.MISC. ACCOUNT INFO: The era for this account can be any time between the 1980's and modern day, though it will predominantly be set in modern London.

SPECIES: Revenant; Vampire; Vampyre.
HERITAGE: The Buckinghamshire Revenant bloodline of 1192. Estranged.
STATUS: Clement actively avoids other vampires and the supernatural lifestyle, though he continuously finds himself in their circles regardless. Clem wields no status or influence in the vampire world as he does not advertise his vampiric heritage and suspects he is considered to be his bloodline's unclaimed bastard child.
VAMPIRIC ABILITIES: Lavishly potent blood; higher than average resistance to the sun; regenerative hair/nail/skin growth; higher than average resistance to the poisoning caused by consuming human food; immaculate sense of smell; (lower than average) vampiric speed; (lower than average) vampiric strength; resistance (not immunity) to the influence and telepathy of other vampires despite not possessing such abilities himself.
MODERN LIFE: Clement has cobbled together a routine whereby he can remain with one research / work team for approximately ten years before he has to move on. Clem falisifies his aging over this period in a number of ways, but his main method is by entering new workplaces with lightened hair and a clean-shaven face. He then allows his natural, darker ginger hair to grow out over time, and grows a beard as he gets 'older'. He has previously been known to make use of hair dye and contact lenses to skew his identity.
What happened in 1984?Within his first year at University, Clem fell very quickly in love with one of his fellow students. Ophelia. She was a spirited young scientist with a sharp-witted sense of humour, and a generous heart that came with a mind as creative as it was studious. But Ophelia was very ill - subject to fits of black moods and anger, her depression worried Clem deeply, though his young love explained that it was solely a consequence of her physical illness: a genetically-inherited disease that attacked her immune system. This disease rendered her allergic to the sun, to many food groups, and caused extreme bouts of lethargy.Clem's academic interests swiftly evolved to focus on pathology and the research of rare diseases, particularly those that were genetic or bloodborne. The couple's continued romance was not necessarily typical - given Ophelia's allergies and sleep habits, the lovers found happiness whilst hosting Dungeons and Dragons sessions of a Friday night for their friends, and sneaking away for midnight picnics in the botanical gardens. Any musician who started a gig after 10PM quickly became their favourite band.By their second year together, the lovesick teenagers had already discussed their entwined futures - marriage, children, a cat and two dogs - a powerhouse family, headed by two accomplished scientists. It was during this time that Ophelia first broached the topic to Clement of him applying his rapidly-growing knowledge to her familial condition. She longed desperately to go out together in the sunshine, and to raise their children amongst a thriving backgarden - not in the shadows. Clement accepted the challenge without hesitation. The years continued to pass, and both students flourished in their academic careers. By their fifth year together, they were engaged to be married.Ophelia's family, who were old alumni of the university, and substantial historical local land owners, were not pleased. Ophelia's father, Lord Dazwell, was a brute of a man, and her three older brothers were no better. What Clem had once dismissed as protective behaviour had soon revealed itself to be the behaviour of small-minded, manipulative creatures who were as outdated as they were repugnant.Despite their challenges, the couple persevered until eventually. . . Clem had a breakthrough. His research was beginning to yield results, and he believed he had found a way to multiply Ophelia's sun-resistant cells, perhaps even to an extent that those cells could overrule the ones that died upon contact with UV rays.Lord Dazwell's eldest son was in contact soon after this revelation. He invited Clem to their family home to resolve their differences in an open conversation exclusively between the men. Clement obliged.Within the walls of this family manor, Clement was cruelly informed that Ophelia was not unwell - she was undead. Her 'disease' was nothing more than a fabrication to conceal her true vampiric nature. Furthermore, Clement's tampering with her sacred blood - the family's sacred blood - was nothing short of blasphemy.Clement, of course, told the delusional gentlemen where they could shove their sick fantasies - he would facilitate medical care for his love if it was the last thing he did.Arguing with the Dazwells was the last thing Clement did (alive). He still retains fragments of the evening - the enraged expression on the brother's face, a table exploding as it was flung against a wall, the wet, burning pit of pain that overtook him as teeth tore into his shoulder. When Clement awoke an unknown amount of time later, he had been left to rot in a locked room within the home. How he escaped, he does not recall, but the agony he felt over the proceeding weeks still haunts his nightmares to this day.Ophelia, along with all traces of his research, were gone. Someone had, however, in his absence, submitted his final paper. Clement graduated with flying colours.
